Are you concerned that prolonged laptop use might harm your eyes? If so, you’re already thinking in the right direction to protect your health. While modern laptop screens don’t emit harmful rays like old CRT monitors did, staring at a bright screen for hours can strain your eyes. Luckily, there are simple steps you can take to protect them.
1. Follow the 20/20/20 Rule
One of the best ways to reduce eye strain is by following the 20/20/20 rule. This guideline suggests that every 20 minutes, you should look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. This short break allows your eye muscles to relax and helps prevent fatigue.
2. Adjust Auto-Brightness
Most laptops now come with an auto-brightness feature, which adjusts your screen brightness based on the surrounding light. Using this feature can help reduce eye strain by keeping your screen’s brightness comfortable for the lighting around you. Check your laptop’s settings to see if auto-brightness is available and turn it on if it is.
3. Use Night Light for Late-Night Work
Laptop screens emit blue light, similar to daylight, which can strain your eyes and disrupt sleep patterns, especially when used at night. Many laptops have a “Night Light” mode that adjusts your screen to warmer colors after dark, which is easier on the eyes. Activating Night Light can reduce eye strain and help your body prepare for sleep. You can Google specific instructions on how to set the Night Light schedule for your laptop model.
4. Maintain a Comfortable Viewing Position
Positioning your laptop screen correctly can also reduce eye strain. Sit about 20–25 inches away from the screen and adjust it so you’re looking slightly downward at the display. This comfortable angle helps prevent eye strain and promotes good posture, which also benefits your neck and back.
5. Keep Your Screen Clean
Dust and smudges on your screen can increase eye strain because they make the display harder to read. Regularly clean your laptop screen with a microfiber cloth to keep it clear and comfortable to look at.
There are some laptop screen cleaning kits also available, which can also be used for the purpose.
